As the leaves begin to change and a chill fills the air, it becomes clear that fall has arrived in the Western New York and the Rochester area, where every conversation ends with "Go Bills." This is the time when many of us start preparing the outside of our homes for the snow that is sure to come, but what about preparing your basement?

The Western New York and Rochester areas are no strangers to snowstorms, some even as early as October, so why wait until it’s too late to make sure the basement of your home is ready for the colder days to come?

Exterior Maintenance

When starting your exterior maintenance, the first step is to scan your home's foundation. During this scan, you should focus on two key areas. The first is any sign of cracking in the foundation. The second is any gaps or holes where pipes and wires enter and exit the house. The larger gaps can lead to cracking, mold growth, or water damage.

If your basement has windows in it, consider adding a window well cover to prevent water from leaking in but still allow light to enter the space. However, if you already have basement window wells, it is recommended that you clean out any debris to prevent buildup during the long winter.

Interior Maintenance

As you start doing an interior maintenance inspection in your basement, it's important you look for signs of water leaking in or excess moisture, like puddles of water or a musty smell. Other signs to look for are mold and mildew, rotted wood, peeling paint, white chalky stains, soggy cardboard boxes, and damaged items that have been stored in the basement.

If you have a sump pump system installed, check to make sure it’s in good working condition since it will help prevent rainwater and melting snow from getting into your basement. If you haven't scheduled an annual maintenance service for your sump pump in the last year, now is a great time to do so!
