Major flooding at the end of June has left residents and businesses of Niagara County with damaged properties and widespread valuable losses. When homeowners and business owners heard that FEMA covered only city infrastructure and not homes or businesses, many people wondered how they would ever recover. Luckily, the 2013 Upstate Flood Recovery Program was put in place and Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that there would surely be flood relief for homes and businesses that insurance did not cover.
$2 million was set aside for this region to help all those who were affected by this flash flooding. Hundreds of homes and business experienced basement flooding, damaged furniture, belongings, equipment, appliances and sadly much more.
During this time the local community came together to help one another clean up the water and flooded structures. The Shawnee volunteer fire department was up around the clock to help homeowners pump water out of their basement and removed any debris.
